Preserve what is valuable
Give books a future

The fee depends on the size of the library, the condition of the books and the owner’s aims. Before work begins, we establish which option is genuinely appropriate for the collection in question.

Preliminary consultation from photographs — free of charge

Please send a few general photographs of the library and photographs of the book spines. We will give a preliminary estimate of the work involved and suggest a suitable option. For a small or straightforward collection, a separate visit may not be required.

Working with a collection

From assessment to a complete end-to-end service

01

Collection assessment

from 10 000 ֏

A specialist visit, an introduction to the collection, a preliminary assessment of its composition and condition, and a definition of the scope and most suitable sequence of further work. If a collection review is commissioned after the assessment, the assessment fee is credited towards subsequent work.

When this is appropriateWhen a library has been inherited, a flat or other premises are being vacated, the number of books is unknown, or older and valuable editions may be present.

02

Basic sorting

from 100 ֏ / book

We separate the collection into agreed categories: keep, retain for use, transfer, sell, remove or send for recycling. Minimum order — 20 000 ֏.

When this is appropriateWhen the principal task is to bring a library into order quickly. For older and inherited collections we recommend an expert review: saving on the initial inspection can mean that interesting copies are overlooked.

Recommended

Expert review

from 180 ֏ / book

Each book receives an initial inspection. We set aside copies that may have historical, bibliographical or collectible value: older and rare editions, unusual bindings, limited print runs, first and lifetime editions, autographs, presentation inscriptions, bookplates and notable provenance.

When this is appropriateFor virtually any older domestic, inherited or multi-generational library. At this stage the task is not to price each book, but to ensure that nothing deserving further study is overlooked.

04

Review and cleaning

from 250 ֏ / book

Expert sorting plus careful surface cleaning of ordinary dust and soiling, where the condition of the books allows safe treatment.

When this is appropriateFor collections after prolonged storage. Mould, signs of insects, water damage and other complex damage require a separate inspection and quotation.

05

Complete end-to-end service

from 300 ֏ / book

Assessment, organisation of the workflow, expert review, sorting, surface cleaning, identification of potentially valuable copies and allocation of books to their next destination. Where required — preparation for storage, transfer, sale, purchase or recycling, and arrangements to clear the premises.

When this is appropriateWhen a finished result is needed: a complete review of an inherited library, a flat, premises, a warehouse or a large holding.

Research and valuation — only for selected copies

01

Preliminary research

from 1 000 ֏ / book

Identification of the edition, the approximate period, the characteristics of the copy and whether further research is warranted.

When this is appropriateAfter an expert review — only for selected books. Researching hundreds of ordinary books in this way is generally not economically justified.

02

Extended research

from 5 000 ֏ / book

Bibliographical identification, study of the edition and the copy, completeness, binding and ownership marks, and a search for comparable market offerings or sale results where this is possible. Complex research is quoted separately.

When this is appropriateFor books that, after the initial selection, genuinely appear rare, unusual or potentially valuable. Age alone does not imply high value.

We distinguish research of a book, an indicative market valuation and an offer to purchase. If an independent formal valuation is required, we recommend engaging an independent specialist in the field.

Describing the holding

We record the part of the collection that is to be retained

01

Basic description

from 500 ֏ / book

Author, title, place and year of publication, publisher and essential details of the copy.

02

Description and photograph

from 750 ֏ / book

A basic bibliographical description with a photograph of the copy.

Cataloguing is especially useful if the library remains with the owner, is transferred to an organisation, or part of the collection is being prepared for sale. If the aim is only to sort the library and free the premises, it is more sensible to carry out an expert selection first and catalogue only the material that is being retained.

A separate decision for the owner

An offer to purchase is free of charge

If books of interest to Second Volume are found during the work, we may make a separate offer to buy them. Purchase is not a condition of the service. The decision always remains with the owner.

A purchase price and a market valuation are not the same thing. A purchase price is a specific sum we are prepared to pay now. A market valuation is a separate study of a copy’s possible value.

A decision not to sell has no effect on the cost or quality of the remaining work.

Offset against the fee

At the owner’s request, the value of books we purchase may be credited in full or in part against the cost of the work. The service fee is agreed first; any purchase of books is agreed separately.

Packing and logistics

We free the space after sorting

01

Packing

from 100 ֏ / book

Preparation of books for storage, transport, transfer or further recycling. Consumables are quoted separately where required.

02

Arranging removal

from 10 000 ֏

Plus transport costs. The fee depends on the number of books, the floor, whether there is a lift, the distance, whether porters are needed and the destination.

When this is appropriateIf the client has their own transport and porters, there is no need to pay for the organisation of removal.

Only books for which no reasonable further use has been found after sorting are sent for recycling. An old book does not become waste paper merely because it is old. Nor does every old book have collectible or monetary value. Our task is to draw a sound line between these categories.

Send photographs of the bookcases and the number of shelves

We will give a preliminary estimate of the collection’s size and advise which option makes sense in your case. We have no interest in an expensive appraisal of every book. We have an interest in ensuring that no book deserving attention is lost.
